It’s the strong colours of red, white and blue that prompted me to take this shot. I guess the image isn’t immediately recognisable as a boat but, if you look closer, you will see that this is a close-up view of the boat’s hawsehole, through which the anchor ropes pass. The boat was on dry land at the time in Cotonou, the major port city of Benin in West Africa. You’ll notice it’s covered in a thin layer of sand which came, not from the beach, but from the Sahara desert to the north, carried by the Harmattan trade winds.
